Students to Present Research in Three Minutes or Less

Up to 12 graduate students will compete for travel funding by explaining their research projects in three minutes or less. The Coastal Communications Clips Competition, hosted by Louisiana Sea Grant, will be Oct. 10 in the LSU Energy, Coast & Environment Building auditorium.

LSU graduate students conducting research relevant to coastal issues are eligible to participate. Interested students must submit an abstract of no more than 250 words describing his or her presentation to Katie Lea at [email protected] by Sept. 24.

Competing students will have three minutes to present a compelling oration of their research to a non-specialist audience – as well as the research’s significance – using up to three static PowerPoint slides. The top three presenters – determined by a panel of judges – each will receive $500 in travel to attend a professional meeting.

“Coastal Communications Clips focuses on the ability of students to consolidate their ideas and to crystalize their research discoveries,” said Robert Twilley, Louisiana Sea Grant executive director. “This exercise develops students’ capacities to effectively explain their research significance in common language.”

A webinar for all students interested in the competition will be held Sept. 16 at 3 p.m. that will provide instructions on how best to prepare presentations for the competition.
