The Telling Tide accepted by SouthEastern Film Festival

The Telling Tide, an hour-long video directed by Darcy Wilkins and produced by Louisiana Sea Grant, has been accepted into the SouthEastern Film Festival. The film will be shown either in Dahlonega, Ga., from April 10-12, or at the second event in Nashville, Tenn., from November 19-22. More than 1,700 films from 43 countries had been submitted to the festival.

“Coastal erosion, subsidence, sea level rise, climate change, channelization, levees: Louisiana’s coast is washing away, and with it, the vibrant cultures that have evolved and thrived there,” said Wilkins, who was a research associate with Louisiana Sea Grant (LSG) when the film was produced.

“Through oral history interviewing, four high schools along the coast were invited to participate in a one-year oral history project that aimed to engage students in scrutinizing their community heritage, the land they have grown up on, the reasons behind Louisiana land loss, and what they stand to lose as Louisiana continues to lose ground. The film incorporates their work and documents what Louisiana stands to lose.”

The festival was founded by several independent filmmakers from all over the Southeast in an effort to make independent film more prevalent in smaller towns and help promote connections between film-making professionals and audiences across the Southeast.
