\nCommunity Science (al
so known as Citizen Science\, Volunteer Monitoring\, Crowdsourcing and man
y more synonyms) is a way of making the research process more inclusive an
d accessible to the public. Participants help collect data around a phenom
enon of concern—water quality\, weather\, public health\, astronomy\, etc.
—and through their collective action provide new insights\, data sources\,
discoveries and perspectives. Data is not restricted to just numbers in a
spreadsheet\, either. Data can be pictures\, videos\, audio sounds\, game
s and more.

Every summer\, LDWF hosts the Wetland Education Teac
her Workshop\, or WETshop\, a week-long\, coasta
l awareness workshop for teachers. Through WETshop\, teachers work with sc
ientists to learn about Louisiana coastal wetlands\, issues\, and history.
WETshop focuses on making teachers into wetland stewards so they can educ
ate their coworkers and students in their home parishes about coastal land
loss and restoration. Workshop experiences provide teachers ideas to inco
rporate Louisiana phenomena-based science into the classroom at all grade
levels. After teachers complete the workshop\, we encourage them to implem
ent a 6-hour wetland stewardship project in their parish with their studen

\nOysters are an important part of Louisia
na’s culture\, economy\, and ecology. They build reefs that slow storm sur
ge\, filter nutrients helping with water quality\, and their reefs provide
habitat for many species. And we also love to eat them! However\, oysters
face new\, unprecedented threats in the form of increased temperature\, m
ore freshwater flooding\, and planned restoration projects.
\nIn thi
s workshop\, we will explore elements of an oyster’s biology and its histo

concerns of oyster decline. This hands-on workshop will have address stat

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries
(LDWF) and Louisiana Sea Grant are partnering to offer a one-day Voluntee

ent\, pond ecology and invasive species.
\n
Upon completion\, all vol
unteers receive a binder with lesson plans\, activity guides and other edu

l contain the materials needed to teach these difficult topics. The loaner
kits range from dissection supplies to fishing poles with tackle.
\n
Lunch and childcare will be provided.
\n
We recognize that finding c
hildcare for professional development opportunities can be challenging. Th
erefore\, we will be providing a simultaneous educational enrichment progr

in this experience. There is a limit to the number of students per teache
r.
