OYSTERS
The impacts
of disease on oysters and the resulting struggles of the oyster
farming industry typify the kinds of problems for which Louisiana
Sea Grant is a catalyst in finding practical solutions. Through
major oyster research programs, Sea Grant has brought together
academic researchers and oyster industry leaders to restore the
commercial and ecological viability of Louisiana oyster harvests.
Current and
previous Louisiana Sea Grant research concerning oysters can be
found by visiting the research
section of this site. Additional information on oysters can be
found on the Louisiana Fisheries Web site (www.seagrantfish.lsu.edu)
as well as the Louisiana Marine Education Resources Web site (www.lamer.lsu.edu).
Consumer information can be found at BeOysterAware.com,
a Web site sponsored by government agencies, higher education
and corporate entities from across the Gulf of Mexico coast.

Acadiana Oyster Reefs
Où est-ce qu'ils sont?
(Where Are They?)
Fifteen interviews were conducted during 2001 to obtain information on the past and current location of oyster reefs in the Atchafalaya, East and West Cote Blanche, and Vermillion Bays and those located in the nearby Gulf of Mexico. NOAA charts (Nos. 11349 & 11351) were displayed during individual interviews for the delineation of reef locations based on personal experience. Information obtained during the interviews was recorded. The resulting maps show the location of past and present oyster reefs, both privately leased and public, isohalines, and other anecdotal evidence.
