BENEFICIAL USE OF DREDGED MATERIAL

The topic of beneficial use of pumped dredge material (PDM) is another pressing environmental issue, particularly in light of Louisiana’s land loss rates and coastal restoration efforts. Marsh restoration projects that use PDM in lieu of spoil banks or disposal are being advocated by the state and several environmental organizations. However, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has cited cost of PDM as the most serious deterrent to the concept, and several major environmental organizations have expressed concern over the quality of the sediments used for marsh restoration.
