STATUS
OF HURRICANE IMPACTED PORTS IN LOUISIANA
The ports
of southeastern Louisiana suffered significant damages during
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Several facilities were damaged or
destroyed and some will be unable to fully operate for significant
periods, thereby resulting in extraordinary costs and lost revenue.
Of the state’s six deepwater ports, three (New Orleans,
St. Bernard, and Plaquemines) suffered extensive damage due to
Hurricane Katrina, but only Plaquemines is still not operating
at this time. Additionally, Hurricane Rita caused damage to the
Port of Lake Charles, Port of Iberia, Port Manchac, Abbeville
Harbor & Terminal District, and the West Calcasieu Port.
Louisiana
Sea Grant assisted the Ports
Association of Louisiana (PAL) in preparing and disseminating
news releases, along with chronicling damages suffered by the
individual ports and their status as they returned to partial
or full functionality.

Additionally,
Louisiana Sea Grant, alongside the National Ports & Waterways
Institute (UNO), addressed the Louisiana Legislature’s Maritime
Advisory Task Force as well as the Joint Committee on Transportation,
Highways & Public Works in March-April 2006 in an effort to
assist the state’s ports. To view the final report to the
Joint Committee on Transportation, Highways & Public Works,
including recommendations made by Louisiana ports, download PAL_Report_Apr06.pdf.
