Ocean Commotion at LSU on Oct. 27

BATON ROUGE – There’s something fishy going on in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center (PMAC). More than 2,200 area students in grades K-8 will attend the 8th Annual Ocean Commotion on Thursday, Oct. 27, at LSU, hosted by the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program.

“Ocean Commotion teaches children about the resources of the sea and coast — the aquatic animals, plants and minerals — and encourages them to become good stewards of Louisiana’s unique ecology,” said Dianne Lindstedt, Louisiana Sea Grant education coordinator. “Our state has a remarkable ecological heritage, and teaching our children to respect this legacy is part of Louisiana Sea Grant’s mission.”

More than 50 exhibitors — LSU researchers and public and private organizations — will have interactive displays set up in the PMAC concourse for the one-day event. Public and private schools, as well as home schoolers, from eight parishes have registered for Ocean Commotion. Students in grades 5-8 will attend from 8:45-10:45 a.m. Students in grades K-4 will attend from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

About 100 of the anticipated attendees are students displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and now are enrolled in Baton Rouge area schools.

Since its establishment in 1968, Louisiana Sea Grant has worked to promote stewardship of the state’s coastal resources through a combination of research, education and outreach programs critical to the cultural, economic and environmental health of Louisiana’s coastal zone. Louisiana Sea Grant, based at LSU, is part of the National Sea Grant Program, a network of 32 university-based programs in each of the U.S. coastal and Great Lakes states and Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands.

Motiva Enterprises LLC, located in Norco and a subsidiary of Shell Oil Co., is this year’s platinum sponsor of Ocean Commotion.
