See
Live LaHouse Demonstrations on July 14
July
5, 2006
Homeowners and home
builders will get an opportunity to see live demonstrations of
hurricane-resistant and moisture-control building techniques and
materials on July 14 at the LSU AgCenter’s LaHouse Resource
Center, which is on Gourrier Ave. near the LSU golf course (off
of Nicholson Drive at the southeast edge of the LSU campus).
Dubbed “LaHouse
LIVE,” the free event will give participants an opportunity
to see first-hand the latest in best building practices and learn
about code updates and other building science-related information
from nationally recognized home building experts. Hands-on method
demonstrations in a large air-conditioned tent will showcase building
systems and products for high wind-loads, weather barriers, door
and window options, historical building designs and more.
LSU AgCenter housing
specialist Dr. Claudette Reichel said LaHouse is the ideal site
to host the event because the structure is in mid-construction
and incorporates many of the latest building materials designed
for the Gulf Coast climate.
“The LaHouse
project will provide the perfect platform for this hurricane-resistant
construction demonstration. Many of the LaHouse goals are similar
– more comfort, durability, better health with less energy,
water usage and damage from natural hazards,” Reichel said.
“For builders
in the Gulf as well as the Atlantic Coast, hurricanes Katrina
and Rita served as a wake-up call,” said Jeff Burton, a
building code expert with the Institute for Building and Health
Safety (INHS). Burton said “LaHouse LIVE” serves as
a chance to not only see the latest best-building practices, but
an opportunity to ask national experts on the latest developments.
The event is one of
four elements in a nationwide initiative called the Hurricane-Resistant
Construction Project, a construction industry initiative being
led by Building Media Inc. in partnership with LaHouse Resource
Center and home building industry sponsors. The other three components
are:
- “Hurricane
Construction Network” (www.hurricaneconstruction.net),
a web-based site for the latest information on hurricane-resistant
buildings.
- “Code
College Network” (www.codecollegenetwork.com),
an Internet-based video training program geared toward builders
and design professionals.
- “Hurricane-Resistant
Construction Guidebook,” a building code reference for
builders in hurricane-prone areas.
LaHouse LIVE is scheduled
to begin at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast and tour of LaHouse.
The demonstrations begin at 9 a.m. and will conclude at 5 p.m.
It’s free, but all participants are asked to please pre-register
online at www.hurricaneconstruction.net.
