Hurricane Rebuilding Presentations Available Online
May 24, 2006

BATON ROUGE – A series of fact sheets to help people affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita navigate Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) programs and related legal issues during the continuing rebuilding process are now complimented by five narrated PowerPoint presentations. The fact sheets and presentations can be found at http://www.laseagrant.org/comm/magazines.htm or http://www.lsu.edu/sglegal/pubs/other.htm#fema.

The information sheets and presentations, developed by the Louisiana Sea Grant Legal Program, answer questions about the National Flood Insurance Program, flood elevations, rebuilding after a flood and other reconstruction matters. The narrated PowerPoints are designed in a simple, non-technical format to give the general public a basic overview of the rebuilding issues.

Additional related information also is available from Louisiana Sea Grant/LSU AgCenter floodplain management specialist and disaster programs coordinator Pat Skinner. She can be contacted at (225) 578-2910 or pskinner@agcenter.lsu.edu.

The information sheet and presentation project came about after Louisiana Sea Grant recognized a need for a plainer explanation of FEMA reconstruction guidelines. Since its establishment in 1968, Louisiana Sea Grant has worked to promote stewardship of the state’s coastal resources through a combination of research, education and outreach programs critical to the cultural, economic and environmental health of Louisiana’s coastal zone.

The Louisiana Sea Grant College Program, based at Louisiana State University, is part of the National Sea Grant Program, a network of 32 programs in each of the U.S. coastal and Great Lakes states and Puerto Rico.
