Fishermen and Other Seafood Industry Participants Invited to 2013 Seafood Academy
February 14, 2013

In an effort to improve the economic sustainability of the state’s seafood industry, the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program and the LSU AgCenter will host the Louisiana Direct Seafood Academy in February, March and April. This series of training programs focuses on marketing techniques, improving product quality, safety and garnering new business.  Shown below is a list of the 2013 Louisiana Seafood Academy training meetings and dock days:

  • LaTer Louisiana Seafood Summit (Houma) -- February 27 & 28, -- Lafourche-Terrebonne Civic Center
  • LaTer Dock Day – March 1 - Dulac, Louisiana
  • Delcambre Louisiana Seafood Academy -- March 5 & 6 – Shrimp Festival Building, Delcambre
  • Delcambre Dock Day-  March 19 – North Pier Dock, Delcambre
  • South Shore Louisiana Seafood Academy (Plaquemine & St. Bernard) -- March 20 – Venice, Louisiana
  • South Shore Louisiana Seafood Academy – Second Location to be announced – March 21
  • Cameron Louisiana Seafood Academy (Cameron & Calcasieu) -- April 9

These training and dock day events provide opportunities for hands-on learning and will include demonstrations from the U.S. Coast Guard, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, NOAA, Louisiana Seafood Promotion Board, Nature Conservatory (equipment grants) and local providers.

The Louisiana Seafood Academy is held on an annual basis prior to the start of the spring shrimp harvest to provide commercial fishermen an opportunity to learn about new technology and industry research and is free to all participants.  Its partner program, Louisiana Direct is a marketing program centered on a suite of websites found online at http://louisianadirectseafood.com .  This marketing initiative connects regional fishermen with consumers for dockside sales in Delcambre, Lafourche/Terrebonne, the South Shore of New Orleans and Cameron Parish. Consumers benefit from receiving the freshest, high-quality seafood, and fishermen are able to establish a retail customer base interested in purchasing their fish, shrimp, crabs and other seafood direct from the fishermen.

Topics at the upcoming training events will vary some based on local needs but will address brine freezing techniques, micro-branding opportunities, eco-tourism business options, The Louisiana Shrimp Story, Coast Guard Safety information, utilizing internet and social media opportunities and other current topics.

“Each topic will be addressed in a brief lecture or presentation with additional follow up by examples of people who are putting these ideas into practice in the industry,” said Marine Extension Agent Thomas Hymel. “The programs will be informative and interactive and will include demonstrations as well as videos and photos.”
