Tourism Industry Information Center Opens Online
October 15, 2001

Tourism, the second largest contributor to the state’s economy, involves people in almost every Louisiana community. To support their needs, a new online information center was recently established by Louisiana Sea Grant College Program and the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism. LaTour, http://www.latour.lsu.edu, provides data and information, all in downloadable PDF format, for the use of tourism professionals, local leaders, and those directly and indirectly involved in Louisiana’s tourism industry.

“We have been conducting research on travelers and tourism for many years,” says Mark Northington, Director of Research at the Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism. “LaTour allows us to efficiently deliver this information to those who want and need it, eventually benefiting the state economically.”

LaTour has a variety of reliable statistical reports, carefully developed analyses, and professional newsletters to assist attraction managers, tourist commissions and community leaders with planning and development. Because the site will be regularly maintained, new data, analyses, and other information will be posted to the site as soon as they are published. Notices on conferences and workshops for the tourism professionals, and direct links to some of Louisiana’s primary tourism resources are also available at LaTour. For example, the complete agenda and list of success story honorees for the upcoming Rural Tourism Conference, Nov. 7-9 in Toledo Bend, are posted under “Conferences,” and the link to the many resources from the Louisiana Travel Promotion Association are accessed under “Other Resources.”

"Through LaTour, Louisiana Sea Grant can share its research, analyses, and professional training to sustain a strong tourism industry here,” says Mike Liffmann, assistant executive director of the program.

LaTour, http://www.latour.lsu.edu, is the Louisiana web site for tourism professionals, community leaders, and those directly and indirectly associated with tourism in Louisiana.
