Reporting to the Louisiana Sea Grant Executive Director, the Assistant/Associate Executive Director for Research participates in all aspects of planning, development, and management of the Louisiana Sea Grant (LSG) College Program.
The Assistant/Associate Executive Director for Research has the primary responsibility for oversight and performance of LSG's research program. Duties include but are not limited to: develop requests for proposals based on identified research priorities; solicit, evaluate and conduct peer review of proposals; convene review panels; synthesize review comments on proposals; interact with investigators on all matters related to research proposals; develop proposal packages for submittal to NOAA and other funding agencies; monitor progress and results of funded projects and liaison with principal investigators; prepare technical and administrative reports and proposals; coordinate program development awards; and supervise support staff processing proposals, reviews, grants and subcontracts. The incumbent will contribute to the synthesis and presentation of results of supported research to various audiences, and will link closely to related educational and outreach functions of the LSG. The Assistant/Associate Executive Director for Research works closely to promote synthesis of scientific research to enhance outreach efforts through interactions and collaborations with the Louisiana Sea Grant Marine Extension Program (MEP). In addition, the position is responsible for several grant programs to support undergraduate and graduate research opportunities in universities across the state.
The Assistant/Associate Executive Director for Research must interact with the sponsored research offices of universities, with research counterparts at collaborating Sea Grant Colleges, and with Grants Office and programmatic personnel at NOAA or other sponsoring agencies to oversee programmatic and fiscal actions affecting research grants, such as budget modifications and adjustments to scopes of work.
Further, working in collaboration with Sea Grant senior management, this position requires strong skills in program reporting and working knowledge of National Sea Grant Office, NOAA reporting requirements and the NOAA planning, implementation and evaluation process.
The position serves as the primary liaison with the LSG advisory committees and peer review panels for proposal evaluation. In addition, the incumbent serves on advisory committees and interacts on a regular basis with the research community, as well as agencies and institutions in the region. The Assistant/Associate Executive Director will be expected to provide guidance and leadership on scientific and research issues, as well as in-house review and comment on outreach products that deal with research activities.

Ph.D. degree or M.S. with five years' experience in administering coastal management programs. Advanced degree in the coastal sciences or related field is required.
Candidates having an earned doctorate with demonstrated capabilities in the management and performance of multidisciplinary research programs and with a publication record will be given preference. Several years of experience in research, research program management and outreach is preferred. Candidates should have excellent oral and written communications and interpersonal skills, along with experience in proposal peer review procedures and grants management practices. Experience working with different aspects of the environmental and social sciences that promote leadership in coastal zone research, education and outreach is desired.

Primary duties for this semester will involve website development and management. Other duties include researching, writing and editing content for a variety of Louisiana Sea Grant print and electronic publications; still and video photography; collection of oral histories for a Web-based project about the commercial fishing culture of south Louisiana; assist with general Communications office functions; other tasks as assigned.

Candidates must be full-time, upper-level undergraduate students or full-time graduate students preferably majoring in mass communications or English.
The intern will work a minimum of 15 hours per week – not to exceed 20 hours a week – for 16 weeks and be paid $9 per hour.

Sea Grant Grand Isle Oyster Hatchery, Grand Isle, La; and, Office of Sea Grant Development, LSU, Baton Rouge, La.
A graduate research assistantship is available to a qualified doctoral candidate to join the Sea Grant Oyster Hatchery team addressing the commercialization of triploid oyster production and the development of tetraploid oyster broodstock in Louisiana.
After initial application, the candidate must be accepted and enrolled into the LSU Graduate School and the School of Renewable Natural Resources prior to receiving the assistantship, remain in good academic standing, and make satisfactory progress toward a PhD degree, as determined by appropriate LSU faculty. A 3.5 overall and semester GPA must be maintained.
Previous experience in oyster aquaculture is preferred, but not required. The candidate will be responsible for their research program with an emphasis in economic development and assist in the operation and maintenance of oyster hatchery, nursery, and grow-out systems in Grand Isle during hatchery season (April-September). Specific responsibilities include:
Assist research team with the development of tetraploid broodstock, commercialization of triploid oyster culture, training oyster farmers, and conducting enterprise budgets on new and existing oyster nursery and grow-out operations;
Work weekends during hatchery season (typically April-September) as well as weekdays during the summer semester at the hatchery, as necessary;
Maintain a personal vehicle in good working order to travel from Baton Rouge to Grand Isle & return when necessary (travel fund allotment); and,
Help prepare interim and final project reports; and,
Participate in educational activities, meetings, conferences.
Stipend:
$25,000/year for up to 4 years + in-state travel mileage, tuition waiver & student insurance supplement.
