UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

The goal of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is to increase the number of undergraduates pursuing marine science careers by encouraging and supporting specific undergraduate research activities. Students propose, carry out, and report results of a research project related to an existing project funded by Sea Grant. UROP, begun in 1992, has funded undergraduate research for more than 50 students at Louisiana State University.

Eligible undergraduates studying biological, life, and agricultural sciences; physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; computer and information sciences; social and behavioral science; and teacher education are encouraged to apply.

Louisiana Sea Grant Communications Internship

The Louisiana Sea Grant College program, based at Louisiana State University's Baton Rouge campus, seeks a communication intern for the Spring 2012 semester. The intern will work a minimum of 15 hours per week – not to exceed 20 hours a week – for 16 weeks and be paid $9 per hour.

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must be full-time, upper-level undergraduate students or full-time graduate students preferably majoring in mass communications or English.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Primary duties for this semester will involve website development and management. Ideally, the intern also will be available to work during the summer 2012 semester. Other duties include researching, writing and editing content for a variety of Louisiana Sea Grant print and electronic publications; still and video photography; collection of oral histories for a Web-based project about the commercial fishing culture of south Louisiana; assist with general Communications office functions; other tasks as assigned.

Louisiana Sea Grant is part of the National Sea Grant Program, a network of 32 university-based programs located in each of the coastal and Great Lakes states and Puerto Rico. Sea Grant programs work individually and in partnership to address major marine and coastal challenges.

The internship will be filled by Dec. 15, 2011.
