The
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) was established
in 1992 by the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program. It provides talented
undergraduate students interested in pursuing advanced studies in
marine-related disciplines with hands-on research experience which
can:
-
increase competitiveness as a graduate student;
-
help with career-related decisions; and
-
establish a working relationship with a faculty mentor.
The
program is directed by David Nieland who is the Manager of Research
and Planning for Louisiana Sea Grant.
Frequently
Asked Questions
Who
is eligible to apply?
Full-time undergraduate students at all Louisiana colleges and universities
are eligible. UROP projects usually require some science background.
For this reason, junior- and senior-level students may be better prepared
to conduct research projects. An application from any student who has
the support of a faculty mentor will be considered.
What
kinds of projects are funded?
Funding is provided through the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program,
which addresses marine and coastal resource issues through research,
outreach, education, and technology transfer.
Previously funded projects have dealt with topics such as coastal
ecology, fisheries, aquaculture, environmental engineering, and genetics.
How
do I decide on a project?
You'll have to do a bit of homework and legwork. First, consider what
type of research you find most interesting. Next, locate a faculty/staff
member working in this field. Then, make an appointment with them to
discuss your interests. If he/she is not familiar with the UROP program,
direct them to this website. Once a dialogue is established, work with
your faculty mentor to develop a reasonable project.
How
much money does a typical project receive?
All projects must be completed during the March to December research
period; you may use any part or all of this time to complete your project.
Total funding in the range of $1500-$2500 can be applied as student
wages, travel, and supplies. Both student wages and academic credit
may be earned concurrently if the regulations of your institution allow
this practice. Supplies are expendable items necessary for the project;
boat and vehicle rental are not covered by UROP.
When
should I apply?
Applications are accepted in November and December for projects starting
the following March. A UROP Application Form can be downloaded by clicking
on UROP_application.doc
(50KB Word document)
What
are the requirements at project completion?
Each UROP student is required to produce a written final report of research
accomplishments. In January or February following the research period,
UROP students also are required to present a brief (15 minutes) seminar
summarizing their UROP-funded research. The annual UROP
Research Symposium, which will be scheduled in association with
the meeting of a state-wide professional organization if possible, provides
a great opportunity to meet other UROP students and faculty and learn
about parallel research projects. We also encourage students to present
their findings at national and international symposia and to publish
in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
