Chalmette High School senior Mia Augustine is wrapping up her internship at the Crawfish Aquaculture Demonstration Pond in St. Bernard Parish. A college scholarship specifically for the intern – funded by the Meraux Foundation – allowed Louisiana Sea Grant/LSU AgCenter marine extension agent Rusty Gaudé to hire her to maintain and monitor the pond.

Augustine learned of the opportunity while taking a Master Gardener class as a high school senior. As someone interested in all things outdoors, she applied for the internship and went to work learning about pond maintenance and operations. Over seven months, Augustine monitored the water, oxygen and rain levels for the pond. And while the pond was flooded from November to May, she documented crawfish growth and the population of native crawfish versus the brood-stock.

Augustine feels the internship helped prepare her for the next phase in her education and career because it allowed her the opportunity to conduct field work and expand her problem-solving skills. “The education I got from this internship will definitely be brought with me as I enter this new stage of my life.” she said. “With Mr. Rusty as my mentor, his dedication really enabled me to learn so much about crawfish aquaculture.”

Augustine will attend Colorado State University in the fall.
