 >\n<p>Louisiana Sea Grant will host the Coastal Connections Infographic Ch
allenge for University of New Orleans students in the Fall 2023 as part of
Innovate UNO week events. The competition is open to UNO undergraduate an
d graduate students conducting coastal research—including\, but not limite
 d to the fields of anthropology\, biology\, design\, ecology\, economics\,
  engineering\, geography\, geology\, history and sociology.</p>\n<p>In thi
s competition\, students will use a mixture of visual imagery and text to
effectively communicate their research findings. An infographic is a tool
that combines imagery\, text and statistical figures to easily convey a su
bject. They help communicate information quickly and clearly. This Coastal
Connections Competition focuses on the ability of students to consolidate
their ideas\, crystalize their research discoveries and share them using
 the power of visual media.</p>\n<div id='attachment_12534' class='wp-capti

DESCRIPTION:<p>Algae is the first link in all aquatic food webs. It support
s the majority of aquatic organisms\, from the largest vertebrates to the
most minuscule invertebrates\, including groups that are very important fo
 r fisheries and conservation\, such as fish\, shrimp\, oysters\, and coral
 s. But as environmental pressures increase\, algal populations are changin
g and disappearing. This has dire consequences for the organisms that feed
on them\, as well as for corals that need particular species of algae to
recover after bleaching events.</p>\n<p>To safeguard our world’s most impo
rtant algal genetic resources\, LSU’s Aquatic Germplasm and Genetic Resour
ces Center is creating repositories through cryopreservation. This include
s the development of new technologies that will allow the recovery and mai
ntenance of multiple species of commercial\, ecological and economical imp
ortance\, now and in the future.</p>\n<p><strong>About the Speaker</strong
 ></p>\n<p>Maria Teresa Gutierrez-Wing is an assistant research professor i
n the School of Renewable Natural Resources and assistant director for out
reach and network development at LSU’s Aquatic Germplasm and Genetic Resou
rces Center. Originally from Mexico\, Gutierrez-Wing earned her Ph.D. in e
nvironmental engineering from LSU. She is a cofounder of Envirotronics\, a
company focused on the development of electronic devices for coastal prot
ection and restoration applications\, and holds patents obtained through h

DESCRIPTION:<p>Subsistence fishing and gardening in South Louisiana is neit
her recreational nor commercial and therefore rarely documented. Louisiana
’s subsistence foodways rely on exchanges between gardeners\, hunters\, sh
rimpers\, crabbers and fishers in coastal communities. Citrus\, cucumbers\
, crabs and duck are often shared with neighbors\, relatives and friends i
n ways that help build social bonds people rely on in good times and bad.
Join us at LSU Science Café to learn about a research project that started
after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil disaster and just led to the publica
tion of a new book\, Bayou Harvest: Subsistence Practice in Coastal Louisi
ana\, which documents food harvesting and sharing in coastal communities.
“Our first task was to figure out how to study it\,” researcher and author
  Helen A. Regis said.</p>\n<p><strong>About the Speaker</strong></p>\n<p>H
elen A. Regis is a professor and cultural anthropologist in the Department
of Geography & Anthropology at LSU. She has authored several books\, incl
uding Fulbe Voices: Marriage\, Islam and Medicine in Northern Cameroon\, C
haritable Choices: Religion\, Race and Poverty in the Post-Welfare Era (wi
th John Bartkowski) and is a contributing editor of The House of Dance & F
eathers: A Museum by Ronald W. Lewis (with Rachel Breunlin and Ronald Lewi
s). Her most recent book (with Shana Walton) is Bayou Harvest: Subsistence
Practice in Coastal Louisiana (2024). As series editor for the Neighborho
od Story Project\, Regis has helped create a new canon of collaborative et
hnography written by and for New Orleanians about their communities. Her p
ublicly engaged scholarship was recognized by LSU in 2023 with the Brij Mo
