Louisiana Sea Grant Art Contest

Louisiana Sea Grant is working on its 2028-2031 Strategic Plan, and we are holding an art contest for its cover and interior artwork!

About Louisiana Sea Grant

Since its establishment in 1968, the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program has worked to promote stewardship of the state’s coastal resources through a combination of research, education and outreach. We have four focus areas: healthy coastal ecosystems, resilient communities and economies, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, and education and workforce development. Divisions:

  • Age 10 and younger
  • Age 11 – 17
  • Age 18 and up

Additionally, we will also have a People’s Choice winner, selected from all entries by likes on Facebook.

Contest rules:

  • Artwork can include paintings, drawings, photography, as well as photos of three-dimensional pieces such as sculptures, carving, stained glass and wood cuttings.
  • Artwork should relate to one or more Louisiana Sea Grant focus areas in some way. See the section About Louisiana Sea Grant (above) for more details.
  • All artwork must be original and not AI-generated or enhanced.
  • LSU and Sea Grant staff are eligible to enter.
  • Artwork will not be returned at the end of the contest. If you do not want to submit the original, options for digital submission are noted below.

Submissions:

  • To enter, submit the artwork or a high-quality digital image of the artwork to Melissa Daigle, mtrosc2@lsu.edu, 238 Sea Grant Building, Baton Rouge, LA 70803.
    • Make sure to include “Art Contest Entry” as the subject line of the email if submitting electronically.
    • In the body of the email or with the in-person submission, include the following information:
      • First and Last Name
      • Phone Number
      • Email Address (this is how we will contact you to confirm entry and notify winners)
      • Artwork Title
      • Category of Entry and if we may post it as part of the People’s Choice category on Facebook.
    • Deadline: September 18, 2026

Awards:

  • The winning art in each division will be highlighted in our Strategic Plan, will be shared online through our social media sites, will be displayed at a location (to be determined) and the artist will receive a goody bag of Sea Grant swag.

Rights and Releases:

By submitting artwork to the contest, you are agreeing to all contest rules and regulations. You also ensure that the submitted work is your original work. If selected to be included in the Strategic Plan, you will need to sign a release authorizing Louisiana Sea Grant to reproduce, distribute, display and use the artwork in connection with Louisiana Sea Grant publications and activities. For artwork submitted by minors, a parent/guardian will need to sign the release.

Judging:

Entries will be judged on creativity, quality and connection to Louisiana Sea Grant and coastal Louisiana. Judges will be made up of a panel of Louisiana Sea Grant staff. Judges will not know the names of the artist during the judging in order to create an unbiased selection. For the People’s Choice category, the art will be posted on Facebook for two weeks, and the art with the most likes will win that category.
