Crop Insurance Webinar for Traditional Oyster Lease Holders Scheduled
A webinar about the Federal Crop Insurance Program for Traditional Louisiana Oyster Lease Holders – Group Risk Plan (GPR) Oysters will be Monday, April 21 at 11 a.m. CDT, hosted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) To participate, visit https://tinyurl.com/m9znas5a.
GRP Oysters is a risk management tool to insure against widespread loss of production of the insured commodity in a parish. It is primarily intended for use by those producers whose oyster landings tend to follow the average parish oyster landings. GRP Oysters uses parish-level landing data as the basis for determining a loss.
GRP Oysters are available in nine parishes in Louisiana: Cameron, Iberia, Jefferson, Lafourche, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Mary, Terrebonne and Vermillion. The insurance is for unavoidable loss of oyster landings directly caused by drought, flood, hurricane and other natural disasters.
The insured crop will be oysters for which:
- Growers/harvesters have an insurable share
- Are for fresh market sale
- Are from grower/harvester leased or owned oyster beds
- Are not grown from experimental or research purposes
Coverage levels are available from 70 to 90 percent, in five precent increments. Catastrophic Risk Protection (CAT) coverage is also available.
Oyster growers/harvesters interested in GRP should attend the webinar. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions.
