Law & Policy Program
The Sea Grant Law & Policy Program (SGLPP) has been a component of the Marine Advisory Services of the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program for nearly 50 years. The mission of the SGLPP is to provide timely and relevant legal information and services for the many users of Louisiana’s coastal lands and waters, including state and local governments, coastal businesses, and the general public. This information covers a wide-range of topic areas affecting the use, conservation, and management of Louisiana’s ocean and coastal environment and resources and falls into four focus areas – resilient communities and economies, healthy ecosystems and habitats, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, and education and workforce development.
Legal advisory services are performed by in-house attorneys and a staff of law clerks. The program employs up to six legal interns, who are given the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with coastal and natural resource legal issues. The students are assigned research projects, which may entail compiling summaries, suggesting changes to current law, drafting legislation, writing formal legal articles or providing legal analysis to the public through informal communication. More information about our legal intern program is available here.
We are always interested in evolving and challenging topics of coastal law. If our legal advisory program can help you in any way, please contact us.
