This three-part online-only series will be available as a Zoom webinar and via Facebook Live. The format each event will be three individual presentations followed by a live question and answer session with all three speakers. Scroll down for details.

Part one—Impacts of oil spills on air quality – June 8, 3-4 pm central

Part two—Impacts of oil spills on water quality – July 30, 2020, 2-3:30 pm CST/3-4:30 pm EST.

  • Barbara Bekins, PhD. Research hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, Water Mission Area, Menlo Park, CA. Dr. Bekins will be discussing her research on a crude oil spill site near Bemidji, Minnesota  from 30 years ago, including the fate of oil in groundwater supplies.
  • Helena Solo-Gabriele, PhD. Professor, Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering, University of Miami. Dr. Solo-Gabriele’s research has focused on evaluating the relationship between the environment and human health. She will be talking about her work on human exposure to oil chemicals at bathing beaches, including some gaps in our understanding and additional research that needs to be performed.
  • Grady Springer, Office of Emergency Response, Coordinator, Montgomery Field Office, Alabama Department of Environmental Management.Springer will share how his agency responds following a spill from pipe, rail, or road, including the regulations that govern local versus federal response.
