What is LSU EnvironMentors?

LSU EnvironMentors (EM) is an award-winning after-school science mentoring initiative that connects public high school students in East Baton Rouge parish with passionate LSU undergraduate and graduate mentors. Together, they work one-on-one throughout the school year to explore environmental science through hands-on research, fieldwork, and meaningful mentorship. High school seniors in the EnvironMentors program can participate in GeoStewards, a summer institute focused on geographic information science (GIS)-based research, created to foster returning students’ growth and confidence in their senior year. These students graduate high school with a GIS certificate.

Why it Matters?

LSU EnvironMentors creates transformative experiences that benefit both high school protégés and LSU student mentors.

“EnvironMentors helped me form a love for science… EnvironMentors connected me to the world around me, teaching me about natural and built environments… EnvironMentors made me realize how much I enjoy science and inspired me to major in forensic science next year, my freshman year in college… Dealing with experiments and science is not always easy, but challenges and problems are essential parts of life; if you allow them to, they can make you wiser and stronger.”
