About the Aquaculture Internship Pilot Program

Louisiana supports one of the most diverse aquaculture industries in the United States producing products such as crawfish, alligators, oysters, tilapia, baitfish, soft-shell crab, ornamental fish turtles, and a variety of game and minor species. Aquaculture is the sixth largest commodity in Louisiana; and is the largest fisheries and wildlife commodity (46%) in Louisiana valuing $704.5 million dollars (gross farm value + value added; Guidry and Blanchard 2024).

Louisiana Sea Grant (LSG) is starting a new internship program to support the growing need for a strong workforce in aquaculture. Many operations are essential for the success of the industry from hatcheries and growout farms to seafood processing. All these operations are looking to find hardworking personnel who will help grow and support this industry. LSG would like to assist people who have not had an opportunity to explore the sector in any way because there is no clear pathway to try it out.

The Louisiana Sea Grant Aquaculture Internship Pilot Program is seeking folks who are interested in working in aquaculture and may or may not have any prior experience with aquaculture.

Funding for this program is through Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, National Sea Grant College Program {NOAA-OAR-SG-2025-28993).
